Dorotha “Jean” Potts, age 87, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, April 9, 2016.

Jean was born on July 15, 1928 in Holland, Texas to Robert Leland and Beula Huckabee Gray.  She grew up on a dairy farm and attended the Holland schools. She was Valedictorian of her 1945 graduating class. She graduated from Mary Hardin-Baylor College in 1949 with a degree in home economics. Jean and Roy Cochran Potts were married on June 12, 1949.

Jean was as dedicated wife and mother of three children. She taught at Camp Hood School for two years after graduating.  She stayed at home to raise her children until they reached school age, then returned to teaching. She taught Social Studies at Belton Junior High for seven years.  Her greatest passion was working alongside her husband in the family owned business, Cochran, Blair, and Potts Department Store for 27 years. She created a museum of the store’s history and it is located on the second floor.

Her presence in the community was evident. Jean was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Belton. She had an unfailing devotion to the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor. UMHB acknowledged Roy and Jean’s support and generous contributions by the dedication of Potts Plaza in 2005. She has left a lasting legacy for future generations of Belton Tiger athletes through the Roy and Jean Potts Swim Center.

Her time with family was precious with ventures to the deer lease, ski trips, and numerous family gatherings. Her hospitality was endless and many went home with her famous peanut butter pie. She valued friendship and enjoyed countless hours with her TNT Wednesday Group and supper club.

You could not meet a more proud grandmother of seven and great grandmother of six. They, as well as many who knew her, affectionately called her “Granny.”

Jean is preceded in death by her parents and sister, Frances Gray.  She is survived by her husband, Roy Potts; 2 sons, Rob and wife Brenda of Belton, John and wife Robin of Belton; a daughter, Patricia Jean Wilson and husband Bobby of Belton; two sisters, Glenda Gray of Lott, Texas and Nancy Curb and husband Tommy of Salado; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
