Doris Wayne Seavey, 86
Beloved by those who knew her
Doris Wayne Seavey passed away on 31 May 2007 at 3 PM. She is survived by her two children, Linda L. Gorchinsky of Quakertown, Pa. and W. John Seavey of Apex, N.C., her grandson Eric Gorchinsky Quakertown, Pa., and a great granddaughter Holly Goodson of Morganton, N.C.
Doris was born at home during a heavy snowstorm on the night of 30 Jan 1921 and in the confusion the doctor wrote 31 Jan 1921 as date of birth. Born then to George A Phifer and Sarah Phifer, formerly Sarah Schaffer, both of Norristown, Pa. Doris grew up and attended school in Norristown, where she was very active in sports such as hockey and tennis among others and received many trophies for success in her sports activities.
She met her husband William B. Seavey while playing tennis at about age 20. Like many others at the time they married before he was sent overseas to the Pacific Theater in the 2nd World War. He was a Lieutenant in the Marines at the time of their marriage on 27 May 1944 and she was 24 years of age. Her son was then born in her husband’s absence while she lived with her parents in Norristown, Pa. and she worked at the Rationing Office. On her husbands return after the end of the war they moved to apartments, but within a couple of years moved into their own home in Plymouth Meeting, Pa., where Doris gave birth to her daughter Linda in 1951. Her family then moved to an early American farm house with some surrounding land and a matching barn in the countryside not far from Quakertown in 1954. She spent many happy years there with horses, outdoor projects, and plants, as well as things like painting and crocheting in a ‘sewing circle’ and raising her children. In about 1982 after Bill’s (her husband’s) first heart attack they decided it was time to do what they had always been planning to do and that is retire in New Mexico. They moved to a house in Las Cruces which they had already purchased a couple of years earlier for that purpose. They favored that over building on the range land they had purchased in Lincoln County above Three Rivers, N.M. in 1966. Time had a way of changing perspective for them though they still enjoyed the land. Doris brought her Honda CB250 motorcycle with her. She had only started riding motorcycles at age 59. Her husband, Bill, had started at the same time at age 60 and his first ride was from Pa. to New Mexico when he bought the house they retired into.
They enjoyed their time in Las Cruces but after the further illness of Bill, Doris decided she would prefer to live in La Luz and moved there in about 1992. She very much enjoyed her home and life in La Luz, New Mexico and would not have traded it for anything. She lost her husband and partner of 56 years there in 2000. Her friends and family, church, many varied activities, and cats kept her happy and comfortable throughout her time in La Luz.
Her older brother William H Phifer of Las Cruces, N.M. and her older sister Mildred Murphy of King of Prussia, Pa. have passed away before her in the past two years. They were her only siblings.
Doris was a family oriented lady. She lived a full and active life as a woman and as a person, but she was a good and dedicated mother and wife all the while. That part of her never seemed to fail. She will be dearly missed by those who knew and loved her.
