Doris Ruth Stanphill, October 11, 1929 – November 25, 2017.
Mrs. Stanphill passed away Saturday, November 25, 2017, in a Temple hospital.
Mrs. Stanphill was born, October 11, 1929, in Rio Hondo, Texas, the daughter of George Thomas Jackson Freshour and Ruth Elizabeth Taylor Freshour. She attended elementary, middle school, and high school in Rio Hondo where she excelled at sports, drama, and public speaking. She attended college at Texas State University in San Marcos. She lived in Pasadena before making her home in Austin in 1978. She worked for many years as a bank teller at Bank of America. For a short while she enjoyed teaching at a Pasadena preschool.
Mrs. Stanphill was an avid bowler until age 86 and belonged to two senior bowling leagues at Westgate Lanes. She loved her many friends she met through bowling. She enjoyed playing games such as Yahtzee, Squee, and Bridge with family and friends, including a recent game of Gin Rummy she fondly recalled with her youngest great-granddaughter. She was a member of Bannockburn Baptist Church in Austin where she served as the benevolence chairman and was known as “The Cake Lady”. She treasured her Sunday school class for its love and for reaching out to others.
She was an avid University of Texas fan with her children who all graduated from the University of Texas at Austin. Her most important things in life were her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, her family, her church and Sunday school classes, her country, her precious State of Texas, her bowling friends, and the Texas Longhorns.
Survivors include one son Roy Samuel Stanphill of Canyon Lake; two daughters Susan Elizabeth Hawthorne and husband Jerry of Salado, and Shirley Ruth Reed and husband Paul of Spring Branch. Six grandchildren, Andy Hawthorne and wife Julia, Bryan Hawthorne and wife Alycia, Sabrina Stanphill, Samantha McManus and husband Mark, Jessica Fellows and husband Chase, and Sarah Reed. Four great grandchildren, Brooklynn, Presley, Brady, and Easton.
