Geneva Doris Roberts Mobley, aged 96, passed away peacefully at her home in Buford, GA on the afternoon of February 8, 2021.

Doris was born on October 18, 1924, in the home her father built in Buford, Georgia.

She grew up on her family’s farm during the heart of the Great Depression. Baptized in the creek near Old Suwanee Baptist Church, she was a lifelong Southern Baptist and a longstanding member of the First Baptist Church of Buford.

She graduated as valedictorian from Sugar Hill High School in 1941 and later Young Harris College in 1943. After two years as a teacher at Grayson High School and Sugar Hill High School, she worked for the U.S. Forest Service, Chattahoochee National Forest, in Gainesville, GA where she met her husband of 29 years. During her marriage, she lived in Florida, Alabama, Louisiana, Pennsylvania, and Georgia, and raised her four children.

For decades, she maintained contact with the many friends she made in those locations, and she re-established old friendships and made many new ones when she returned to her homeplace in Buford in 1987. Before retiring, she worked for Robins Air Force Base and American Greetings. She watched Buford change and grow, and she loved her family as it changed and grew.

Doris thoroughly enjoyed learning about her family lineage, and she spent numerous hours exploring and recalling the details of her family’s history. She was inducted into the First Families of Gwinnett County in 2007 after documenting her ancestors in Gwinnett back to 1830.

Generosity was Doris’s hallmark; she freely shared vegetables grown in her garden and packaged blueberries from her prized blueberry bushes for any neighbor or friend. Doris never missed an opportunity to send a card or special note to friends and family.

She is survived by her sons: Mark and (Susan) Mobley, Norris, TN; Larry Mobley, Jacksonville, FL; daughters: Judy Payne, Dacula, GA; Donna and (Jeff) Lanier, Ocala, FL; grandchildren: Kristin and (Jimmy) Yann, Miles Mobley and (Katie Simmons), Peyton Lanier, Connor and (Mackenzie) Payne, Ben Mobley, Casey and (Kyle) Keith; great-granddaughter: Claire Yann; and numerous cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John Arley and Fay (Sudderth) Roberts, and her younger sister, Thelma Roberts.
