Mrs Doris Mae Auter Montgomery was born on February 11, 1920 to Mary Elizabeth Auter and Stephen L. Auter in Indianapolis, Indiana. She received her formal education through the Indiana Public School System and graduated from Crispus Attucks High School where she excelled in her studies.
Doris attended Howard University where she received a Bachelor’s Degree in Art and Education. On July 4, 1941 she married Wilder Percival Montgomery and remained married 54 years until his death in 1995. They had two children: Stephen, born in 1944 and Gordon, born in 1947. The couple settled in Washington, D.C. where Doris was employed by the Washington, D.C. Public School System as an art teacher for over thirty years. Doris was a very active and social person. She enjoyed many hobbies and activities including bridge, knitting, crocheting, sewing, candle making, travel and the theater. She was an avid painter, creating many beautiful works of art. She also had a “green thumb”. Her home was filled with lush plants which seemed to thrive in their environment. She loved going to and giving parties and was a gracious hostess. She was looking forward to attending a party at her condominium in early August. She was a loyal and enthusiastic member of the Washington, D.C. chapter of the Northeasterners Inc. social club where she served in many capacities. Doris Auter Montgomery was blessed to reach the age of 95 years. She departed this life on July 7, 2015. She was predeceased by her husband, Wilder Percival Montgomery in November of 1995. She leaves to cherish her memory her two sons, Stephen Wilder Montgomery of Roswell, New Mexico, and Gordon James Montgomery of San Diego, California; four grandchildren, Stephen Wilder Montgomery, Jr. of Albuquerque New Mexico, Nicole Jeanelle Montgomery of Dartmouth, New Hampshire, Sean Wilder Montgomery of San Diego, Brenton James Montgomery of San Diego, one step-grandchild, Shari Lynn Hampton of San Diego; three great-grandchildren, Dominique Marie Montgomery of San Diego, Mya Montgomery of Grosse Ville, Michigan, and Alexia Brynn Montgomery of San Diego; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other loving relatives and friends.
