Doris Mae Groat, 89, a former Meredosia, IL and Brownsville, TX resident, died Wednesday, May 2, 2018, in Harlingen, TX.
She was born July 1, 1928, in Springfield, IL, the daughter of Friedrich and Hazel Miller Zimmerman. She married Lee Groat on June 7, 1946, in Springfield, IL, and he preceded her in death on Oct. 28, 2009.
She is survived by one son, Lee D. (Fran) Groat Jr. of Carson City, NV; one brother, Fred (Myra) Zimmerman of Granbury, TX; one sister, Carolyn (Gary) Sandidge of Pawnee; nieces and nephews; and special friend, Kay Mattson of Brownsville, TX. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and one sister, Dorothy in infancy.
Mr. and Mrs. Groat owned and operated Groat Masonry and Groat Stone Company in Springfield, retiring in 1974. They then founded Green Pastures Christian Retreat Center near Meredosia, retiring from there in 2002. Doris was a member of Church of the New Song. She enjoyed doing needlepoint, framing, and loved reading and studying the Bible.
