Doris J. (Jones) Trebat, 92, of Bethlehem, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 23, 2015, at Moravian Village, Bethlehem. She was the loving wife of George E. Trebat for over 62 years. Born in Chicago, IL, Doris was the daughter of the late Arthur R. and Violet (Craw) Jones. She grew up in small towns in Oregon. She graduated from University High School in Eugene, and then graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Oregon with a degree in Psychology. Doris wanted to see the world, so she bravely moved to New York City soon after graduation. She began her teaching career at Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church, where she taught preschool. She met George while working there, and they were married in 1953. Doris earned her Masters Degree from Columbia University, and loved to teach reading to people of all ages. She worked as a reading specialist in the Highland Park, NJ school system for almost 20 years. After retirement, Doris worked with Literacy Volunteers of American, serving as Board President for 15 years. She received the Literacy Volunteers Lifetime Achievement Award in 2003. She was an avid reader, and participated in many book clubs over her lifetime. She also enjoyed singing in the chorus at Highland Park, NJ, and with the Moravian Village Singers. Survivors: husband George; children Elisabeth Waller and her husband Terry of McFarland, WI, Alan Trebat of Lowell, MA, Julie Trebat and her husband Robert Leder of Bethlehem; 8 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; and several nieces. Doris was predeceased by her sister Betty Pearson, and by her brother Donald Jones.
