Doris Marie Homann, 78, of Centralia, passed away at 7:30 P.M. on Friday, April 7, 2017 at Odin Healthcare Center, surrounded by her family. She was born December 18, 1938 in Centralia, Illinois, daughter of Elmer Lee Warnecke and Anna Mae (Dillinger) Lusch. She married Donald Homann on April 12, 1965 in Mattoon, Coles County, Illinois and he preceded her in death in 1999.
Doris Marie Homann is survived by two step-children, Donna Homann of Mattoon and Scott Homann, several step-grandchildren from the Mattoon area, two brothers and four sisters: Roy C. Warnecke and wife Susan of Frisco, Texas, Margaret Ann Atteberry of Centralia, Deanna S. Froneyberger and husband David of Mt. Vernon, Dianna L. Youngblood and husband Dennis of Keenes, David L. Lusch and wife Andrea of Salem, and Michelle F. Malcom and husband Rick of Odin; her special Aunt Doris Law of Trenton, many nieces and nephews.
Doris is also survived by lifelong childhood friends Barbara Alli and Barbara Gibson both of Centralia and her special auxillary friends who have kept in touch with her for all of these years: Janet Snow from Mattoon, Terry Calabrese and Diane Penack from Chicago. She was preceded in death by her parents, grandmother Lucy (Dillinger) Dulaney and grandfather Peter Dillinger, her husband, a step-son Jay Homann, a sister Brenda Sellers, a nephew Floyd Walker Jr, several aunts and uncles and her precious pets Mandy, Princess and Dodie.
Doris worked with her mother Anna Mae as a cook at the Langenfeld Hotel, before she moved to Mattoon, where she met her husband, Don. Doris loved weddings and ran a catering business in the Mattoon area for many years. Later she catered for the Douglas-Hart Foundation of Mattoon. She was a member of the St. Johns Lutheran Church in Mattoon. In the late 1980’s Doris and her husband Don tended the Memorial Park Friendship Gardens in Mattoon, created by the late Helen Douglas Hart, in memory of her husband.
Doris continued her work in the gardens for 25 years and was a caregiver to Mrs. Hart until she passed. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, flowers and was an avid reader. She was a diehard Barry Manilow and Clay Akin fan and loved their music and attending their concerts. Her greatest enjoyments were being in the VFW Auxillary, spending time with her family and friends and being loved by her four legged companions. She loved to travel.
Doris was a Life Member of VFW Auxiliary Mattoon #4325 under the eligibility of her late husband Donald and was initiated as a member on August 26, 1969. Doris was very active in her Auxiliary and then went on to the District level where she rose through the chair being District President in 1974-1975 of District 11 before the Department was redistricted and District 17 was formed in 1976-1977.
Doris then rose through the chair to the state level serving as Department President in 1981-1982. With 48 years of continuous membership in the Auxiliary, Doris always enjoyed catching up on Auxiliary, District, and Department happenings, she was always interested and always encouraging.
