Doris Helen Filkins, 94, a long time Fishkill resident passed away on November 6, 2021 at the Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie, NY. She was born on December 30, 1926 in Beacon, NY, daughter of the late Ed ward T. & Viola (Smith) Johnson.
On August 28, 1954 at the First Presbyterian Church of Beacon she married Donald E. Filkins, who predeceased by her on September 17, 2015 after 61-years of marriage.
Doris was a life-long member of the First Presbyterian Church of Beacon, where she was an active leader in the Session, and a fixture in the choir.
Doris graduated with a Masters Degree in Special Education from Hartwick College. She was a school teacher for over 30-years at the South Avenue Elementary School in the Beacon City School District; she pioneered in special education. She was a proud recipient of a renown outstanding teacher award. Doris was an avid reader, birdwatcher; she loved hearing the latest on her grandchildren & great-grandchildren.
Doris is survived by her 4 daughters: Margaret Rifenburg, Anne Degli-Angeli, Miriam Tully and Janet Reynolds. She is also survived by her sister Patty Weissman, her 10 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren with 1 more on the way; and several nieces & nephews.
Along with her husband of 61-years, she was predeceased by her 2 sisters & 1 brother.
