Dorene Ann Gilbert, “Dori” to family and friends, and beloved wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt, and friend, passed away Tuesday morning, October 25, 2011, following complications related to diabetes and surgery.

Born on June 8, 1965, in Chula Vista, CA to Michael and Patricia Glatz, Dori grew up in San Diego and was a champion roller skater at the regional and national levels. She was also a huge fan of all sports.

She married her husband, Russ, on October 15, 1994. She and Russ had known each other since the age of 6. She was diagnosed with diabetes at the age of 4, and fought a life-long battle with it. In January of 1995, she received a kidney transplant. The donor was her husband, Russ. It was the first non-related living kidney donation in Arizona.

In July of 2000, Russ and Dorene adopted their son, Christopher. Dorene loved to watch Christopher play hockey and was Chris’ Den Leader in Cub Scout Pack 33. She thoroughly enjoyed attending Chris’ Courts of Honor with Boy Scout Troop 33 also.

Dorene was a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant and worked in the medical field for many years. In August of 2004, she interviewed for the position of Administrative Assistant for the NAU Athletic Department with new Athletic Director Jim Fallis. Jim was so impressed that he hired her over the phone.

Dorene is survived by her husband Russ, and son Christopher, her mother Patricia, and her brother Michael and his wife Colleen, nephews Michael and Jonathan, and nieces Bethany and Julia.
