Doran Calvin Perryman, aged 95, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, June 23rd, 2020, following a lengthy and valiant battle with Parkinson’s Disease.
Mr. Perryman was born February 25, 1925 in Moody, the oldest son of Edgar and Eunice (Alton) Perryman. He was raised on a farm near Neff Park in Coryell County, and attended school in Moody.
D. C. was a member of the Greatest Generation who proudly enlisted in the Navy shortly after his high school graduation, serving in the Pacific Theater aboard the USS Crittenden achieving the rank of Radarman 3rd class.
Upon his return to civilian life, he married his childhood sweetheart, Martha Jane Coulter, from Bruceville Eddy, Texas. Together they raised 4 children on the same farm where he grew up.
Mr. Perryman was a farmer and rancher, and as a young adult was active in Young Farmers, serving in a leadership capacity.
He supplemented his income by driving a school bus and officiating basketball games for Moody and many other area high schools. For many years he also provided the color commentary at Moody HS football games. His fun-loving spirit and humor made him well loved by the students he served.
As his children grew, he served on the Moody school board, acting for a time as board president, and also served his community on the first Moody Medical Clinic Board.
He was a longtime active member of Moody Leon United Methodist Church, serving as Board President and teaching Sunday school for many years.
Doran eventually became a loan officer at Production Credit Association and made many lifelong friends through his work there.
After his retirement, he continued to help his son on the farm, built custom made furniture pieces for his family members, and always managed to find time to cheerfully help his family with any need. Into his 80’s he was delivering meals to shut-ins through his volunteer work for Meals on Wheels.
His long-standing in the Moody community as a farmer earned him the honor of serving as Grand Marshal at the Cotton Harvest Festival in 2002.
It was just a little over a year ago that D.C. received a great honor when Representative Bill Flores awarded him a Congressional Veterans Commendation for his service during WWII and his continued service to his community thereafter.
Last November, Doran and Martha celebrated 73 years as man and wife, leaving a legacy of commitment and faithfulness as an encouragement and example to their children and grandchildren.
D. C. was preceded in death by his 2 brothers, Jimmy and Earl, and by his granddaughter Sarah Kate Kitchens.
