Dora Marie Garris, beloved daughter of the late Walter Taylor, Sr. and Addie Victoria Rogers Madre, transitioned to her heavenly home on Saturday, November 6, 2021.

Marie, as she was more commonly known, was born on May 14, 1943, on the Eastern Shore of Virginia.  She received her education in the public school systems of Accomack County.  On August 7, 1962, Marie met the love of her life, William H. Garris, and the two raised their family in New Rochelle, New York. To this union, four children were born.  Marie was employed as a domestic worker in private homes.  She was a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and sister.  Anyone who knew Marie knew of her love and affection for children. In fact, her house was always filled with children from many families, including her countless nieces and nephews.  In particular, she had a special bond with her granddaughter, Tiona M. Garris, who primarily cared for Marie for several years as her health began to decline.

Marie was preceded in death by her loving husband, William Garris; and three siblings, Walter Taylor, Jr., Gladys Bagwell, and Judy Sturgis.

Left to cherish fond memories are: four children, Vinet M. Garris Smith (Michael), Alexander F. Garris, Kenneth O’Keith Garris, and Janet E. Garris; seven grandchildren, Jarrell R. Garris, Tiona M. Garris, Jasmine R. Garris, Josiah R. Garris, Kwame M. Smith, Isaiah A. Garris, and Josiah Garris; four great-grandchildren, Jace Mallard, Jeremiah Garris, Jeffrey Wheeler III, Zahari Mykal Freeman Smith; three sisters, Barbara Tindley, Norma Drummond (Sammy), Asia Nock, and Brenda White (Rev. Willie); one brother, Wayne Taylor; two aunts; Patricia Orgias and Gloria Jean Rogers; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
