Dora Joaquina Alegria Alberto, 74, of Springfield, passed away peacefully in the care of Heritage Hall in Agawam on February 21, 2022. She was born in Samora Correia, Portugal in 1947 to Victor Manuel Conde Alegria and Henriqueta Malico Romao, both predeceased. Splitting time between Samora Correia & Lisbon, Portugal, she was the older sister of the late Joao Custodio Alegria of Samora Correia and the late Helena Alegria Pederneira of Ludlow, MA. Having lost her mother at a young age, she is survived by her loving stepmother, Perlina Alegria and her youngest brother, Victor Alegria and his wife Ana Pedro Alegria, and sister-in-law, Maria Emilia (Mila) Romao Alegria all of Portugal. Educated in Portugal, she settled in Ludlow, MA in 1967 where her husband, Jose Marques Alberto (predeceased) had immigrated the year before to play soccer for the Gremio Lusitanos. A skilled writer, she left behind countless poems, letters and essays in both her native language of Portuguese and in English. An avid listener of Portuguese Fado, she is best remembered for a beautiful singing voice that could be heard while she cooked wonderful Portuguese meals that filled the airwith her love for all things Portugal. Retired from United Plastics Group of Chicopee, MA where she worked for two decades as a Quality Control Supervisor, she took in strays and loved her precious cats Shadow, Mika and Shana.
She will be missed by her sons Frank and wife Ana Alberto, Eddy Alberto and partner Judi O’Brien, and Joseph “Junior Marques” Alberto and wife Mia Alves. She also leaves her cherished grandchildren Nicholas Alberto & wife Kay, Andrew Alberto, Marisa Alberto, Emma Alberto and step grandchildren Susan & Anthony Afonso. She leaves her great grandchildren Aubree, Brady and Chloe Alberto. Dora also leaves behind her niece and nephews David Pederneira, Ana (Pederneira) Ferris & Daniel Pederneira, as well as her brother-in-law, Jose Pederneira in the United States. She also leaves her nephew Joao Alexandre Alegria and two nieces, Mafalda and Carolina Alegria in Portugal.
