Don was born in Oklahoma City on October 5, 1948, along with his wombmate, Ron. His father, Grover, who was in the oil field rental tool business, resided in various Texas towns during Don’s early years.

Don did return to OU for a while in 1986. Notably, in connection with a paper written by Don in English 2223, the professor gave him an “A” and wrote: “I hope you don’t mind if this grade is both the first and last that I give you. In my short time as a “teacher,” I have come to learn that there is a point at which grades serve no useful purpose.  We have reached that point rather quickly this semester; so let us transform this tradition of student-teacher exchange of paper-for-grade into an exchange of ideas.”  Apparently, the one paper was all that was necessary to secure Don’s grade in that class.

For a number of years, Don was quite a vagabond, and he hitchhiked across much of the United States, as well as part of Canada. In his early work years, Don mainly did various construction work. However, later, Don’s knowledge of computer technology enabled him to get jobs as a technical assistant in various call centers.  Don resided in Norman, Oklahoma during the majority of his adult life, and he loved OU sports. He also liked to fish and play his guitar and harmonica.

Don is preceded in death by his parents, Grover and Ann Pool.  He is survived by his daughter, Renee Weeks (and her husband Richard Weeks); a grandchild, Willam Weeks; a brother, Ronald Pool (and his wife, Sarah Pool); a niece, Carrie Whitaker (and her husband, Randy Whitaker); a nephew, Benjamin Pool (and his wife, Dannielle Pool); and various grandnieces and grandnephews: Chelsea Hylton, Cooper Pool, Cassidy Whitaker, Cole Pool, Cameron Pool, and Catherine Pool, as well as a great-grandniece, Rylie Hylton.
