Donald W. Freeman, 81, of Freeport , died Friday, June 6, 2008 at FHN Memorial Hospital . Born October 27, 1926 in rural Mt. Carroll Township to Margaret and William Freeman. He graduated in 1944 as Class Salutatorian from Mt. Carroll High School . He graduated in 1948 from Browns College of Commerce with honors. He was employed as a Cost Accountant for Burgess Battery Co. until inducted into the U.S. Army in Nov 1950.
While in the Army, he was assigned to the 5th Army Headquarters in Chicago. After being released from active duty in Nov 1952, he was employed by Honeywell as a Cost Accountant, then later transferred into the Marketing and Customer Service areas. He retired in 1986 after 34 years.On July 17, 1954, he married Marilyn A. Schaeffer. He joined First Lutheran Church of Freeport in May 1955 of which he was an active member. He served as a Sunday school teacher, Superintendent with the Sunday school, and other various church committees.
Don also served as an election judge for many years. His memberships included: Stephenson County Farm Bureau (50+ years), Freeport Golden K. Kiwanis Club, Freeport Management Club, and Rockford Chapter of the National Contract Management Assoc. He enjoyed square dancing with the Crossroads Square Dance club. His hobbies included reading, attending band concerts, traveling, and camping. He enjoyed sports and was proud of the academic and athletic achievement of his children and grandchildren.
He especially enjoyed watching his grandchildren play soccer, baseball, and softball. In the past, Don volunteered as a tutor in the Lincoln-Douglas 2nd grade classroom. He enjoyed children so much that this was a great honor to follow their progress.
Surviving are his loving wife, Marilyn, who served as his nurse, dietician and pharmacist. Also his son, Major David W. Freeman (USAF) retired, and his wife Stephanie and their son Brandon Freeman and daughter Sarah (Ben) Loreto of Tucson , AZ. Four daughters – Karen Driscoll of Tucson, AZ, Janelle (Rex) Blomberg of Freeport, Darla Kortemeier and daughter Megan and son Derek of Freeport, Laura (Rodger) Fye and son Logan and daughter Kelsie of Rockford, Illinois. Brother Robert G. (Dianne) Freeman of “The Villages” Florida, and numerous cousins.
Preceding him in death were his parents and son-in-law Brian Kortemeier.
