Donald Michael Streit, age 91, of Spirit Lake, passed away Monday, July 1, 2013, at Lakes Regional Healthcare in Spirit Lake. He was born on August 19, 1921, in Ashton, Iowa, to Tony and Mary Streit. Don graduated from St. Joseph’s Catholic High School in 1939, and attended Radio School in Kansas City, Missouri, and Pilot Training in Ft. Worth, Texas. After finishing his schooling, Don served his country in the United States Army Air Corps from 1941, until 1945. He flew the Alaska Wing of the air transport command to and from Alaska. Don was united in marriage to Margaret Murray on June 4, 1947, in Emmetsburg, Iowa. In 1951, he started working for the Sheldon Airport as a flight instructor and charter pilot. Don retired as President of Archer Petroleum Corporation. Don was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, where he was a member of the Knights of Columbus since 1941, and the American Legion for over fifty years. He enjoyed spending his spare time with his family! He also enjoyed fishing, flying and golfing. Don shot a 45 on nine holes two weeks ago. Don is survived by his wife, Margaret Streit of Spirit Lake; four children, Patrica Ray, and her husband, Gary, Michael J. Streit, and his wife, Sonya, Dennis Streit, and his wife, Patti, and Daniel Streit, and his wife, Candi; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; his brother, Tony Streit, and his wife, Mary, a sister-in-law, Luella Streit; and two sisters, Kathleen Richter and Betty DeWall. He is preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Bob, Paul, Leonard and Jim; and a sister, Marian Sheforgen.
