Donald Steven Dunston was born March 26, 1952, to the late Donald Sr., and Selena Dunston in Queens, New York. He was the first born followed by Dennis and Richard. He was the product of the New York City public school system and attended P.S. 91, Winthrop J.H.S, and was accepted to the High School of Music and Art in New York City. After graduation he was accepted into New York University where he received a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in music education.
In the early 60’s, along with our parents, he joined the Lenox Road Baptist Church at 1356 Nostrand Avenue in Brooklyn, New York. Growing up in the Dunston household required regular church attendance.
When the weather was nice, he and his brothers were given money for bus fare on the B12, but would walk to church instead and buy candy from the store along the way. He possessed a deep voice and was drafted by the choir director to sing bass and baritone. He also played classical/electric guitar during concerts; assisted with setting up stage and sound equipment; provided expertise for audio and sound recordings; and gave guitar lesson.
Also back in the early 60s, he was a member of the Cub Scouts and later joined the Boy Scouts here in Brooklyn. He achieved the highest rank attainable in the Boy Scouting program as an Eagle Scout.
He developed formidable abilities on the guitar. He played the music of the masters: B.B. King, Muddy Waters, Wes Montgomery, Jimi Hendrix, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Earl Klugh and of course his classical favorites: Bach, Vivaldi, and Tarrega. He devoted his life to the sacred art of music through playing, composing, teaching, and performing for over five decades.
Donald leaves: brothers (Dennis and Richard), uncle (John & Ivelisse White), aunts (Erna White, Alice Martin), cousins, and his beloved Lenox Road Baptist Church family.
