Mr. Donald Richard Gourd

Mr. Gourd, 80, of Matthews, NC, passed away Friday, June 11, 2010 at Harris Hospice in Charlotte. The son of the late Edward and Mary Gourd, Don was born in New Haven, CT on April 30, 1930. He graduated from the University of Connecticut, where he earned his BS in Pharmacology. Mr. Gourd served with the US Army during the Korean War and at the time of his discharge, held the rank of Staff Sergeant.

Prior to moving to Matthews, Don was a resident in the Greenwich-Cos Cob area of Connecticut for many years. He had been employed by the former White’s Drug Store in Cos Cob as a pharmacist, served as a fire fighter and EMT for Cos Cob Volunteer Fire Dept. and had been an active member of the Diamond Hill United Methodist Church. While in Matthews, he was employed by Eckerds, as a pharmacist, at the Albemarle Rd. store. He was a member of Matthews Presbyterian Church and an active volunteer with Habitat for Humanity-Matthews. In addition to his parents, Don was preceded in death by his first wife Muriel Sasson and a step-daughter Gayle Overstreet.

He is survived by his wife Lillian Shank Gourd, his stepchildren Ralph and Wayne Hughes, Dawn Dove, Virginia Anstead and Lianne Sasson, his brother Raymond Gourd and his sister Corinne Bunch. He is also survived by his 9 step-grandchildren.
