Mr. Shafer, a Korean War veteran and past commander of Roy Calvin McGinnis VFW Post 7073 in Parker, died Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2009, at Gulf Coast Hospital in Fort Myers, Fla.
Born Oct. 13, 1928, in Wilkins Township, Allegheny County, Mr. Shafer was the son of Amos C. and Iva. H Graham Shafer.
Mr. Shafer was of the Protestant faith.
He was involved in Scouting for many years and served for 10 years as a scoutmaster.
He was a member of Parker City-Allegheny Valley Masonic Lodge 521 of Parker, the Consistory Valley of New Castle, Zem Zem Temple in Erie and the Clarion County Shrine Club.
Mr. Shafer was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War.
He was a member and past commander of Roy Calvin McGinnis VFW Post 7073 of Parker. He also served as a VFW district commander.
Mr. Shafer was a member of the Armstrong County Council. He was a member of Miller-Rankin American Legion Post 636 in Foxburg, and he was a long-time “ham” radio operator and a member of the Amateur Radio Relay League.
He was a graduate of Wilkinsburg High School.
Mr. Shafer retired in 1985 from Bell of Pennsylvania after 38 years of service in the engineering department.
He was married June 20, 1953, in Wilkinsburg to the former Martha L. Cole, and she survives.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two children, Donald K. Shafer and Lynn J. Hillstrom Dahl; four grandchildren, Keith, Kira, Cole and Craig; a great-grandson, Dagen; and a number of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law and a number of brothers and sisters.
