Donald Paul Van Hal was the youngest of five children born to William and Wilma Wichhart. He was born December 16, 1939, in Pella, Iowa.
Donald graduated from Pella High School in 1957 and went on to attend Central College. He worked as a baker at Vander Ploeg Bakery, where he was given the nickname “Doughmaker.
Donald was an avid gardener, fisherman, and enjoyed traveling. He worked very hard on the properties that he owned in Pella.
He was united in marriage with Connie Nelda Lauderdale in Liberal, Kansas on August 28, 1987. Their daughter, Paula, was born two years later.
Donald and his family were long-time Hawkeye football season ticket holders.
Donald passed away July 29, 2008, at the age of sixty-eight in the Huntsville Hospital in Huntsville, Alabama from complications due to Alzheimer’s Disease.
Those left to cherish his memory are: his daughter, Paula, of Pella; two brothers: Robert and Marion and his wife Joan, of Pella; and two sisters and their husbands: Marie and Henry Van Leeuwen of Hanover, Indiana, and Junella and Jerry Morrison of Oskaloosa, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Connie, and his parents, William and Wilma.
