Donald “Lee” Brown October 24, 1924 ~ September 3, 2012 Donald Lee Brown, 87, passed away September 3, 2012 at Antero Reservoir, doing what he loved most … fishing. Lee was born October 24, 1924 in Oak Grove, Louisiana to William and Ethel (Hammett) Brown. Lee enlisted in the Air Corps at Barksdale AFB in Louisiana in 1940. He attended Gunnery Training in Texas and Colorado in 1942. He flew two tours as a waist gunner on a B24 from 1943-1944. On October 22, 1944, Lee’s plane was shot down over Germany and he spent 2½ months in a hospital in England. After his recovery, he was stationed in Munich, Germany from 1948-1949, hauling food and coal into Berlin. Lee served in Korea from 1952-1953 as an engineer gunner on B26s and 3rd Bomb Wing 13th Bomb Squadron known as “The Devil’s Own Grimm Reaper”. From 1958-1961, Lee was stationed at Hahn Air Force Base in Germany working on Mace and Matador Missiles. His squadron was called “The Watch on the Rhine”.
