Donald Henry McCarty, Sr., 84, of Newnan, husband of Sarah Eileen Hardy McCarty died Sunday, September 24, 2017 at Insignia Healthcare. Born in Carroll County, December 20, 1932, he was the only child of the late John Henry and Mary Ophelia (Vines) McCarty in the community of Banning, Georgia (Carroll County). His grandparents were George Washington and Rhoda Josephine (Thompson) McCarty and William Thomas and Mary Elizabeth “Molly” (Waters) Vines. He was retired from the City of Newnan where he served as a City Building Official. He was member of East Newnan Baptist Church where he was a member of the Friendship Class. Through the years, he has served many active roles in several local churches including as a deacon, Sunday School teacher, and choir member. Among these churches were New Hope Baptist Church, Sunnyside Baptist Church and Trinity Baptist Church. Donald grew up in Coweta County, he graduated from Newnan High School in 1950, and attended West Georgia College. Donald was greatly influenced by his grandmother Molly Vines. They ran a small grocery store out of the front of his grandmother’s house at 34 Wilcoxon Street, Newnan, Georgia when he was a boy. She helped him learn the business skills that propelled his future business career. When Donald was in high school, he worked for Newnan Electric Company which he continued after high school graduation, he later worked for Lindsey Barron’s company as an electrician and foreman. This further sharpened his business skills. He founded Don McCarty and Company which was an electrical and plumbing company that operated throughout Coweta County. Donald established an outstanding reputation throughout the county and always held true to his slogan – “Perfection costs less than correction.”. He ran this company successfully for 21 years. He was a master electrician and master plumber in the State of Georgia. In 1980, Donald became the chief building official for the City of Newnan. He retired from the City of Newnan in 2001. During his tenure, he helped to facilitate the City of Newnan during years of tremendous growth and balanced that growth with conservation of three historic areas in the City of Newnan. He also helped to elevate the standards of building construction throughout the state and nation. He served on many committees with the Building Officials Association of Georgia. He was a past President of this Association. Donald also represented Georgia well with his involvement with the Southern Building Code Congress International and was further elected to the International Plumbing Code Council. He was instrumental in the establishment of a comprehensive model code for minimum standards for the International Plumbing Code Council for the nation. Donald was a member of the White Oak Golden Kiwanis Club which he thoroughly enjoyed participating in during his retirement years. Mr. McCarty was preceded in death by a son, Ronald Thomas “Ronnie” McCarty. Surviving in addition to his wife of sixty-five years are five children, Donald H. “Don” McCarty, Jr. and wife Maryland of Snellville, Dan McCarty and wife Debbie of Rock Spring, Beth Collier and husband Dave of Leesburg, Nancy Duffey of Newnan and Pam Sibley and husband Alan of Newnan; grandchildren, David McCarty, Philip McCarty and Brittany, Zeb Griffin and Robyn, Kelly Lillard and Kevin, Alan Collier, Jessica Brown and Justin, Ashley Duffey, Evan Sibley, Elijah Sibley, Jake Collier, Brooke Griffin and Hunter Duffey; and great-grandchildren, Zeb Griffin, Jr., Julia Brown, Adalynn Griffin, Eden Brown, Jack McCarty, Samuel McCarty and Anna Ruby Brown.
