Donald E. Stack (Don) 90, of Elkhart passed away on January 17, 2021 after a brief illness. Don was born in Elkhart on February 4, 1930 to Sibylle (Guenther) and Joseph Stack. He attended both St. Vincent Elementary School and Elkhart High School. After high school, Don served in the US Army.
Don was an active member of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, where he built many lasting friendships and spent a portion of his career working at the school and church. Don will be remembered for his faith in God, his dedication to family, friends and his great sense of humor. Don was a voracious reader of US history biographies and the Elkhart Truth.
He enjoyed gardening, traveling throughout the US, especially the southwest and National Parks, spending time with friends, neighbors, and texting with his grandchildren.
He is survived by his children’ mother Judy Taylor of Elkhart; his sons William of Elkhart and Michael (Allison) of Ellenton, Florida, and daughter Lisa (Stephen) of Northbrook, Illinois, his grandchildren, Eric Stack, Ellie, Piper, and Macrae Downey and his faithful dog Gerald, a rescue pit bull.
He was a favorite uncle and great uncle to many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Carl, Edward, and Vern and sister Louisa. He was a beloved father and grandfather, who will be greatly missed by the many whose lives he touched. He was known throughout the Prospect Street area where he spent the last 29 years taking care of his neighbors by welcoming new ones with US flags, making casseroles, or checking on everyone’s general well being. The unofficial “Mayor of Prospect” will be missed.
