Donald E. Lonergan, 86, of Jacksonville, IL died Monday, January 26, 2009 at his residence.
He was born June 3, 1922 in Jacksonville; the son of Richard E. and Marie Tuite Lonergan. He married Mary Retzer on February 25, 1943 in Jacksonville and she survives.
He is also survived by a daughter, Kathryn Swanson (husband, John) of Lincoln; four grandchildren, Theresa Patterson (husband, John) of Alton, Mary Boyd (husband, Jeff) of Defiance, OH, John P. Swanson of Aurora, and Thomas Swanson of Lincoln; three great grandchildren, Jack Patterson, Emily Patterson and Andrew Boyd; a brother, Jerry Lonergan (wife, Mary) of Jacksonville; a sister, Helena Perkins of Washington; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Richard Lonergan.
Mr. Lonergan was a graduate of Routt High School and served with the US Navy during WW II from 1940 to 1946 as a chief petty officer in the South Pacific Theater. He was a union ironworker for 35 years spending the majority of his career as a foreman with R. D. Lawrence Construction. He was a member of Ironworkers Local #46, Church of Our Saviour, and was a 4th degree Knight with the Knights of Columbus. He was a former member of Jacksonville VFW Post #1379 and a former volunteer with the Boy Scout program at the Illinois School for the Visually Impaired. He enjoyed fishing and RVing across the country.
