Donald Edward Givan, born August 9, 1930, to Edward B. and Kathleen E. Givan, Indianapolis, IN, passed away February 1, 2014 at St. Vincent’s Regional Hospital. In his teens, Don was a Youth Minister at Irvington Presbyterian Church in Indianapolis. He was a Boy Scout, earned Eagle Scout in 1944 and selected for Firecrafter. Don graduated from Thomas Carr Howe High School in 1948. He attended Purdue University Extension in Indianapolis until enlisting in the U. S. Air Force in 1951, serving 4 years during the Korean Conflict.
One year was spent in Philadelphia, attending Philco Electronics School where Don was one of 20 chosen from the Air Force to attend this prestigious school. His remaining 3 years were spent at Kessler Air Force Base, Biloxi, MS teaching Electronics to flight crews. In October 1953, Don married Anita Louise Strahl at Grace Methodist Church, Indianapolis, IN. They started their lives together in Gulfport, MS until his discharge from the Air Force in January 1955.
Don attended Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN, 1955-1957, graduating with a degree in the Electrical Engineering while working at the Rostone Corporation. After graduation, he was employed by P.R. Mallory in the Design Department, and then Quality Control. Don also obtained a 1st class radio operators license and taught electronic classes at the Valparaiso Extension in Indianapolis. In 1963, Don was employed as Quality Control Director with the Wabash Magnetics Company, Wabash, IN. He joined Delco Remy Division of General Motors, Anderson, IN in 1964. In 1975,
Don was transferred to Meridian, MS, as the Quality Control Superintendent. He returned to Anderson in 1983 where he worked on a joint venture between Dae Woo Corporation of Korea and Delco Remy as International Projects Operations Support Manager. Don retired from Delco Remy January 1993. He was later asked to return as a Delco Remy consultant for 4 years. Don derived great joy from his family and their activities, faith in God, wood-working, RV travel, and golfing before limited by health problems.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Anderson, IN, cubmaster of Pack 225, mentor for S.C.O.R.E., and a past member of: Edgewood Country Club, Anderson, IN., Briarwood Country Club, Meridian, MS and Anderson Country Club, Anderson, IN.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Anita Strahl Givan; Daughter, Karen Lynn Detamore, Fishers, IN; Sons, Dr. Donald Keith Givan and wife Teresa, Ridgeland, MS, Gary Steven Givan and wife Kathy, Denver, CO, and Dr. Daniel Allen Givan and wife Teresa, Helena, AL; Brothers, Dick Givan and wife Yvonne, Madison, MS and Tom Givan and wife Judie, Indianapolis, IN; Grandchildren, Matt Detamore, Aaron Detamore, Michael Detamore, Virginia Willoughby, Rachel James, Kelsey Givan, Alexandra Givan, August Givan, Oliver Givan, William Givan, and Andrew Givan; and Great Grandchildren, Harper and Clayton Willoughby.
