Donald Dallas Keyes, age 66, of Athens, Georgia, passed away while hiking in the Grand Canyon on Saturday, May 19, 2007. He was preceded in death by his parents, Stanley and Louise Keyes, and his sister, Nancie Keyes. He is survived by his wife, Valerie Aldridge of Athens, Georgia; his daughter, Jennifer Keyes and husband, Miles Moorman and grandson, Ian of Boulder, Colorado; his son, Thomas W. Keyes and wife, Ute, of New York City; and his step children, Dan A. Aldridge, his wife, Lisa and granddaughter, Addison; Trent J. Aldridge of Atlanta, Georgia; and Matthew P. Aldridge and his wife Meagan of Athens, Georgia; his sister, Katherine Tri and her husband, Nick, of Newberg Oregon, his aunt, Mary Hetherington of Basking Ridge, New Jersey and various cousins, nieces and nephews.
Keyes was born December 24, 1940 in New York City. He was a graduate of Lawrenceville Prep School, Lawrenceville, New Jersey, Yale University and New York University where he received his PhD in Art History. Dr. Keyes taught at Ohio State University, Smith College, and was curator of American Painting at the University of Georgia Museum of Art until his retirement. He was also the Director of the Marietta Cobb Museum. He was active in the local arts communities in both Atlanta and Athens as one of the original founding members of Atlanta Photography Gallery and Five Art in Athens which houses ATHICA (Athens Institute of Contemporary Art Gallery) and several artist studios. He also served as the coordinator of the artists’ market for ATHFEST, an annual music and art extravaganza and was the auctioneer for the annual Mental Health Benefit Auction. He loved sailing, travel, music, cooking, art and collecting photography.
