Donald “Coxie” Cox passed away August 30, 2013. He was an avid racing fan and a driver himself. He took his final lap, and checkered flag to heaven surrounded by his family. He was born to Rev. Levi & Viola Cox, August 10, 1937. AS a son of a preacher, he was raised in church and baptized at an early age, though he had a wild streak, his heart always belonged to the Lord.
He attended school in Merom and Anderson where he played basketball, which began a life-long love for the sport. He was a fan of Indiana University, the Anderson Indians, and the Pacers. He retired from Guide Lamp after 32 years. He was a member of the local U.A.W. 663 and Rocket Racing Club at Sun Valley Speedway. Don was diagnosed with cancer in 2004 and the fight was tough, he never gave up. In 2010 the fight was back on. After a long and courageous battle, God called him home.
Don is survived by his wife Wilburta Billie Parrish Cox of 57 years; their three children, Michael Chris Cox, Duane Ike Cox of Anderson and Donelle Clensy of Middletown; grandchildren, Mikhael Cox, Mandi Cox of Anderson, Terri Clensy of Middletown and Donald I. Cox of Anderson; step-grandfather to Danny and James Springer of Anderson; five brothers and two sisters, Auther Cox of Anderson, Paul Cox of Sullivan, Patty Harold Schuyler of Markleville, Tom Debbie Cox of Merom, Wanda Vaughn of Pendleton, Gary Penny Cox of Anderson and Tim Cindy Cox of Merom; several nieces and nephews; brother-in-law, Don Parrish of Middletown; sisters-in-law, Joan Lovett of Chesterfield and Nancy Paul Girt of Anderson.
He was preceded in death by his parents and in-laws Wilbert Dessa Parrish; grandparents, Arthur “Doc” Adelia Cox and Roy Martha Scott; daughter-in-law, Terri Hughes Cox; sisters-in-law, Marjorie Fadley, Betty Gothfried and Nancy Cox; brothers-in-law, Richard Parrish and Clayton Lovett. “We would like to extend a special thanks to Dr. Naqvi and the cancer center nursing staff; Dr. Shaver; Sharon and Diane of the Coumadin Clinic; as well as our new hospice family. All of your effort, concern, and support gave us more time with Don, not only that you made that time good.”
