On August 11, 2022, Donald Corwin Bush, loving husband, father, brother, son, grandfather, and friend, passed away at the age of 83.
Don was born in 1938 to Frank and Evelyn Bush (nee Smedsted) in Waubay, South Dakota, and soon after moved to California. A true self-made man, when he graduated from high school in 1956 he started working as a Technical Operator for AT&T in Oakland, California. This began a career that spanned over 30 years and many states, countries, and continents, allowing Don to play an important role in the development of communication technology from laying fiberoptic lines in the Pacific Ocean to determining the best place for cell towers in the Middle East. Don retired from AT&T International as a Manager of Middle Eastern Operations and went on to work for Lucent Technologies for several more years. He then continued his engineering work in the US defense industry as a private contractor working all over the world, often involved with covert projects.
While his professional achievements are impressive, it was Don’s charm, humbleness, sense of humor, and engaging personality that truly made him such a special, memorable person. Throughout his years traveling the world, Don had many adventures and could tell a story like no one else! After retiring for good, Don continued enjoying his world travels and a good game of golf with friends, as well as long walks and time with his faithful companion, Lucy, his Labradoodle. We will remember our father with great respect as a kind, loving, intelligent man with a strong work ethic, and more first-hand knowledge of different countries, cultures, and politics than anyone else we know! To know him was to love and admire him.
Don was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Gary, two wives: Betsy Bush (nee Ross, 1989) and Jewelene Bush (nee Kittinger, 2019), and his daughter, Allison. He is survived by sons Donald Jr. (Kathy), and Scott, daughters Elizabeth Curtis (Jay), and Amy Scranton (Rick), and grandchildren Kayla, Donnie III, Kacey, Olivia, Corinne, Betsy, Brian, Katie, Maggie, Timothy, Caroline, Leah, and Nathaniel, as well as one sister, Margaret Bush. Don is also survived by three stepdaughters Jodie Caskey, Janie Gilham and Julie Brunette and many more step-grandchildren from them.
