Donald Joseph
Donald Arthur Joseph, 84, passed away in the early morning hours of May 16th, 2009. He was born in the small farming community of Luckey, Ohio on July 22, 1924. At the age of 19, Don enlisted in the United States Navy. He saw action in the Pacific Theater while serving aboard the destroyer-minelayer USS Tolman at the Battle of Okinawa. After the war, Don attended The Ohio State University under the GI Bill, earning his degree in accounting. In 1945, he married his childhood friend, Carolyn Johanssen, also of Luckey, Ohio.
Don worked as a revenue agent in Dayton, Ohio, and then accepted a position with the DuPont Company in Delaware. He also worked for the Lukens Steel Company, and retired as the Vice President and Treasurer at the Johnson Matthey Corporation. Don was a founding member of Saint Paul’s Lutheran Church in Newark, Delaware, and was on the church councils of Calvary Lutheran Church in West Chester, Pennsylvania and later Bethel Lutheran Church in North East, Maryland. He was also active in the Lion’s Club.
Don is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Carolyn, along with his three daughters and their spouses: Karen Robards and Michael O’Neal of Alexandria, Virginia; Elizabeth and Edward Urban of Easton, Pennsylvania; and Kristine and Paul Lebras of Arlington, Virginia. He is also survived by his granddaughter, Lauren Robards, and his brother, Fred Joseph of Utica, Ohio.
