Donald J. “Birch” Birchmier, of Lewiston and a longtime Moscow resident, died Sunday, April 8, 2017 at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center. He was 93. Don was born January 28, 1924 in Moscow to Gus and Amy Jacksha Birchmier. He grew up and attended school in Moscow, graduating from Moscow High. He attended the University of Idaho for a time prior to serving in the Army Air Corps from 1945-46. He was discharged as a First Lieutenant. Don returned to the University of Idaho, and earned his bachelor’s degree. Birch ran Orland Hardware until the store closed and then worked at Furniture Center in Moscow until his retirement. Don and Harriett Orland were married on January 6, 1943 in Coeur d’Alene and raised two children. Harriett preceded him in death in May of 1999. Birch loved fishing. He and his longtime companion, Louise and friends spent many hours in the boat on the water with a pole in one hand and a drink in the other. His favorite fishing spot was Lake Roosevelt. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Elvira and Katherine. He is survived by his long-time companion Louise Babbitt, his son Chuck (Yasuko) Birchmier of Mill Creek, WA; his daughter, Jane Musick of Moscow, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; his grandson-in-law, Jim Stemmene and longtime friends Bob and Betty Robinson and Ken and Carol Robinson.
