Domenic A. “Dom” Calderone, 93, of Galesburg, died at 6:23 p.m. on Monday, October 31, 2011 at Seminary Manor.

Dom was born February 17, 1918 in Galesburg, the son of Peter and Antonina (Mele) Calderone.  He married Lorene Mercer of Marceline, Missouri on July 7, 1941 in Davenport, Iowa.  Dom is survived by his wife of 71 years, Lorene of Galesburg; a son, Peter (Margie) Calderone of Victoria; a sister, Bernice (Blake) Neely of Galesburg; and four grandchildren, Becky (Curt) Good, Peter, Anthony (Delisa), and Domenic (Kelly) Calderone.  He is also survived by 3 great grandchildren and 4 great great grandchildren.  Dom was preceded in death by a son, James on October 16, 1983; three brothers, and one sister.

Dom graduated from Corpus Christi High School and attended Brown’s Business College.  He was the originator of Club 19, owned Dom’s Sports Center, and Calderone Wholesale Sporting Goods.  Dom was a member of the Eagle’s Club for 75 years.  He was also a member of Father J.O. Hunt Knights of Columbus Council 556, Galesburg, Pheasants Forever, and Ducks Unlimited.  He was also a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church.  Dom loved to spend time fishing and hunting.  Over the years he sponsored many youth baseball and softball teams.  One thing Dom will always be remembered for was his greeting, “How they bitin’?”
