Dolores Dixon Vehmeier, well known singer of Freeport, went to be with her Lord Thursday November 4, 2010.

Born May 11, 1933, she was the daughter of Taylor Z. and Lucille (Meyer) Dixon. On August 18, 1956 at the old United Brethren Church in Freeport she and Melvin C. Vehmeier of Lena were united in marriage. Dolores was a 1951 graduate of Freeport High School. She was a member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Freeport and was active in the After 5 Club until her ill health prevented her attendance. Dolores worked at Micro Switch until May, 1994 when she retired with over 32 years of service and was a member of Micro’s 25 year club.

All her life she loved to sing, starting at age 3 singing on the radio. She and her husband sang in many of the area churches. She took music classes at Highland College. She was a choir director, directing both Junior and Senior choirs. She was a director of the RSVP Songsters as well as a radio choir and reading to school children. For many years she was a member of the Freeport Choral Society and sang for many weddings and funerals. She was one of the leaders of her church’s Prayer Chain and sang in the church choir.

She is survived by her husband, Melvin; one daughter, Melody (Dean) Scott of Georgetown, KY; one son, Paul (Kathy) Vehmeier of Freeport; five grandchildren, Elizabeth (Dale) Sharp, Jonathan and Christina Scott of KY, Jacquelyn and Nathan Vehmeier of Freeport; two great granddaughters, Abigail and Hayden Sharp of KY ; one brother, Lawrence “Larry” Dixon of Dayton, MN; twelve nieces and nephews, two sisters-in-law, Charlotte Buss and Eleanor Vehmeier; one bother-in-law, Robert Vehmeier.

She was preceded in death by her parents.
