Dolores Decaroli, 82, of Oglesby, passed away Friday morning, January 20, 2012 at Manor Court in Peru. She was born January 20, 1930, in Oglesby, to Gabriel and Margaret (Carra) Decaroli. She attended LPO for 2 years, and then worked as a bookkeeper for Hunter-Duncan Lumber Company for 15 years.
She enrolled at the University of Illinois where she was a Phi Beta Kappa, and earned a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish. She earned a Master of Arts in Spanish Education at University of Wisconsin-Madison after winning a National Defense Education grant to attend a summer session there. She taught Spanish at LaSalle-Peru High School for 29 years where she served as Chairman of the Foreign Language Department. She was the sponsor of the Spanish Club and PEP Club. She organized student trips to Mexico, Spain, France and London.
After retirement she taught Spanish at Holy Family School. She served on the Parish Council at Holy Family, Trustee of Oglesby Public Library, and was a Brownie and Girl Scout Leader. She was a member of various teachers organizations: ACTFL, ICTFL, Illinois and LaSalle County Retired Teachers Associations, Omicron Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma. Dolores is survived by her sister, Catherine “Kate” (Roger) Cowell, of Oglesby and six nieces and nephews and twelve great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Joseph (Sheila) Decaroli.
