Dollie M. (Hewitt) Higby-Goodwin, age 90 of Midland, died Tuesday, September 13, 2011 at MidMichigan Medical Center.

“Dollie on the Corner” (as she was known) was born at home “in the pine grove” in Greendale Township, November 22, 1920 to the late William and Minnie (Smith) Hewitt. She lived in the Midland area most of her life.

Dollie married Melvin Higby August 3, 1940 in Midland; he died August 15, 1958 due to a motorcycle accident. She then married Emmett Ray Goodwin in Hancock on April 23, 1960; he predeceased her June 29, 1989.

Dollie was a country girl that grew up on the family farm, milking the cows and doing whatever else was needed. She was a hard working woman that took life as it was given to her. She loved the outdoors, barefoot whenever she could be. She loved growing her own fruits and vegetables, and could be found working on a tractor or car or anything else that needed fixing. She had a great love for all animals.

She was always seen wearing a simple white tee shirt and a skirt that she would have made. Her door was always open for anyone that wanted to just drop in to visit; she always had the coffee on. Dollie was a life member of the Order of Eastern Stars in Alma.

She is survived by her nieces and nephew, Dixie-Pat Heidenberger, Kim (Mike) Whitt of Lubanon, TN, Charles Michael (Debra) Dickinson of Rochester Hills, Raenae (Frank) Keller of Sterling Heights; brother in law, Lloyd (Dick) Dickinson of FL. Also surviving are Vickie and Michael Dowker as well as several great nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husbands, Dollie was predeceased by her special friend, Gerald Dowker; sister, Beulah Dickinson; and nephew, Danny Dickinson.

A special thank you to Dr. Tammy Phillips and Wendy; Applewood AFC in Mt. Pleasant, Lauren, Mark, Sandy, Mary, Lori and Linda for all the care that was given to Dollie; Jeff Cole for your help with Dollie’s home; and all the neighbors/friends that kept an eye on Dollie while she was at home; everyone that took the time to stop by and share that coffee with her; the Midland EMS and Midland Emergency Room for all the compassion shared.
