Dixie Kathryn Ficklin, on August 29, 2015 was set free to be reunited in Heaven with her loved ones, and left a very deep hole here on earth. Dixie was surrounded by her family and her loved ones at the time of her passing. Dixie was born in Salida, CO on September 1, 1936, she was the daughter of the late John and Alma Sage. She graduated from Montrose High School and went on to marry the love of her life and soul mate, Robert “Bob” Ficklin of Delta on August 20, 1955. This union took her from coast to coast – on the East Coast in New Jersey, on the West Coast to San Francisco, as her husband was in the military. After his discharge, they brought their family back to the Western Slope of CO, first to Montrose and then to BeBeque, and a move to Grand Junction before making their home in Naturita.
Dixie and Robert were blessed with six children, Alma (Don) Wancura, of Silt, CO, Randy (Lorrie) Ficklin of Olathe, CO, Teresa Ficklin of Grand Junction, CO, Paul (Jamie) Ficklin of Delta, CO, Sandy (Donald) Johnson of Naturita, CO and Carolyn Mattas of Grand Junction, CO, and the blessings grew to 22 grandkids, 49 great grandkids and one great-great grandkid.
Dixie’s favorite holiday was Christmas because she knew all her kids and their kids would be there to celebrate. She had to have the house all decorated with everything in its own spot. All the Santa Clauses, Mrs. Clause, the Reindeer, The Snowmen, the Villages, and the Nativity Scenes, and everything to make the house a Wonderful Holiday Experience. The opening of gifts, youngest to oldest, the dinner that she prepared with everybody’s favorite chocolate pie, lemon meringue, coconut cream, banana cream, the cookies, and the candies all made with her loving hands. The chaos – she wouldn’t have it any other way! She was patient no matter how loud it got or how impatient anyone else was.
She enjoyed picnics, cooking the fried chicken (the best!), the potato salad, watermelon, and yes the water fights that always seemed to happen no matter if there was a water hose, a bucket of just a water gun, it didn’t matter that she wasn’t involved herself, she enjoyed the outcome and fun everyone else was having. She enjoyed everything any anything when her family was together, even if it was just for an hour, her family was her life. She will be missed by all that knew her and she will never be forgotten. If we could have only one wish for everyone, it would be to have a person like her in your life. Loved by all.
