Dimitrios D. Sirinakis, 79, died Sunday, February 27, 2011 at Transitions HealthCare in Sykesville, MD.
Born July 17, 1931, in Skyros, Greece, he was the son of the late Dimitrios George and Kyparissia Efthasiou Sirinakis.
He served in the Greek Navy before arriving in the US in 1960. He graduated from the University of Michigan with a Masters degree in Electrical Engineering. After working at Martin Marrietta in Hagerstown for several years, he decided to pursue his true passion and launched his own company Skyros Shipping Company. His first vessel was named the Margarita. For most of the 1970’s he owned and operated a number of cargo vessels out of New York, NY. In 1983 he closed the business and for the next 25 years pursued various maritime projects and entrepreneurial activities primarily in Port Isabel, TX until his retirement. In 2008 he moved to Westminster, MD to be near his family. He enjoyed playing cards, music and cooking.
Surviving is his sister-in-law Zoe Sirinakis; nephews James Sirinakis of Crownsville, A. Harry Sirinakis, of Westminster and John Sarris of Greece; nieces Kyparissia Sirinakis, of Bethesda and Amerissa Fergadis of Woodland Hills, CA.
He was predeceased by a sister, Efrosini Sarris of Skyros Greece and a brother, George D. Sirinakis of Westminster.
