The Rev. Dick R. Nichols, 79, of Elkhart, went into the loving arms of his savior, Jesus Christ, at 7:10 p.m. Tuesday, July 26, at his residence in Elkhart.
He was born June 4, 1937, in Leesburg, to the late Milton and Ruth (Pierce) Nichols.
He was one of 13 children. Two siblings survive, Betty Lopez and Inez Berg.
In May of 1965, he married Melva (Metzger) Nichols and together they raised three children, Penny (Amy) Nichols, Beth Nichols and Steve Nichols, all of whom survive along with two grandsons, Jalen and Jacie Nichols.
Also surviving is his companion of the last 22 years, Rocky McLeod, who also became his loving caretaker in his last years, with the assistance of Donnie Reed.
Dick was an amazing husband, grandfather, and friend. He was a loving and giving man who was always willing to help others. He had great compassion for both people and animals. He was hardworking and loved to laugh and make others laugh.
He became a minister in 1983 and even after retiring from the pulpit he continued to perform his favorite duty of uniting people in matrimony, which he continued into the last months of his life. He spent 51 years in the manufacturing work force, most of which was in the wood molding industry.
He will always be loved and missed.
