Nancy Diane Young Whitesell, age 83, of Lakeport, Florida, died November 15, 2021, at rest in her home. She was born in Baywood, VA, to the late Don and Lena Young, on February 13, 1938. Diane attended Galax High School and then continued her education at Radford University where she graduated with her Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education.
Diane married her sweetheart, David Franklin Whitesell, on August 26, 1961, and just celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. She was a dedicated and loving wife, a caring mother of three children, and wonderfully fulfilled her role as “Grammie D” to seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
She taught Earth Science at Fairfax High School in Virginia. After retiring, she and David covered thousands of miles crisscrossing North America in a 25-foot trailer exploring provincial, state, and national parks and pestering children and grandchildren along the way.
Diane had a love of nature and geology. She had various crafting hobbies and spent countless hours watching the beauty of God’s creations outdoors, but she was happiest when she was spending time with her family, usually busy preparing meals and lots of sweet treats!
She is survived by her husband, David; daughters, Pam Brown and Dana Sharman; her son, Frank Whitesell; seven grandchildren, Mandy Hunter, Eric Brown, David Whitesell, Emily Smith, Teresa Myers, Kara Whitesell, and Nick Garrett; a great-grandson, Beckham Hunter; and beloved nieces and nephews.
