Dewey W. Schreffler Jr., 86, died Wednesday, October 21, 2009, at Golden Living in Shippenville following a brief illness.
Born on October 18, 1923, in Emlenton, Mr. Schreffler was the son of Dewey and Ruth McGinnis Schreffler.
He was married in Foxburg to the former Helen Makuch on February 16, 1946. She survives.
He attended school in Emlenton, graduating from Emlenton High School in 1942. After graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Army. A veteran of World War II, he served with the 159th Engineer Battalion attached to the 4th Armed Division, building bridges, maintaining roads, plowing snow, and fighting as infantry during the Battle of the Bulge, which earned him five Battle Stars.
Following his military service, he was employed by Quaker State Oil Refining Company, retiring in 1985 after 42 and a half years of service.
Mr. Schreffler was a member of St. John Reformed Church in Emlenton, The Emlenton Rod and Gun Club, Veterans of Foreign War in Parker and American Legion Post #636 of Foxburg, the Parker City-Allegheny Valley Masonic Lodge # 552, and The Consistory Valley of New Castle. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.
In addition to his wife, surviving are two sons, Dewey W. Schreffler III and David M. Schreffler, both of Emlenton, three granddaughters, Calli McCluskey, Melissa Ierace, and Amanda Bengele, four great-grandchildren, Colin and Katie McCluskey, Jacob Ierase, and Danny Herr.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda Anne McCracken.
Mr. Schreffler was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
