Devin N. Hunter Sr. “41”, beloved and devoted husband, father, and ‘Pop-Pop’ departed this life on Saturday, April 25, 2020. Devin was born on July 29, 1966 in Monterey, California. He was preceded in death by his mother, Louise (King) Pierson and father, David J. Pierson.
Devin was known by his family and closest friends as ‘41’ or ‘Hunter’. He attended Ord Terrace Elementary in Seaside, CA until 1977, at which time he and his family moved to the Washington metropolitan area to join his grandfather, Joe King Sr. Devin continued his education in the Prince George’s County School System where he attended Skyline Elementary, Benjamin Foulois Junior High and Crossland High School (1984).
At a very young age, Devin played and was involved in multiple sports to include: baseball, basketball, football and other self-taught sports. Devin loved fishing, football and dominoes, so much that he never left home without any of those things. His love for sports earned him the honor to be an achieved USFTL (flag and touch) football player, where he traveled often to participate & win tournaments. He was also a respected little league and high school football coach. Devin loved training and coaching children, bringing out their best potential athletically and mentally. He believed the discipline of sports prepared them in life and enhanced them socially. He promoted respect for self and others. His motto and favorite saying was “Make smart decisions, U Dig”.
Devin had a huge heart and loved helping others, which he believed was the making of a true Christian, to do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Devin was there to assist anyone who needed help: from mover to mechanic, from babysitter to fish fryer. He did it all! And, could fix anything, such that his wife would jokingly call him MacGyver. He even made his mother’s famous stuffing for those who enjoyed it. Devin was indeed the person to call. He was a “jack of all trades”.
Devin was employed as a property inspector for the Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs (Washington, DC) and a Facilities Manager for the American Academy of Otolaryngology (Alexandria, VA). He held other odd jobs, where he worked part-time at the Capital Centre Arena. It was there in 1997, where he met and later married his wife, Marci. Together they raised their 5 sons to be the intelligent, athletic and respectful young men they are today.
In 2014, Devin experienced sheer excitement when his first grandchild, Hakeem Hunter was born. Equally as excited, in 2018, his granddaughter, Zori Hunter made her entranced into the world! Devin embraced and absolutely loved being a grandfather and was affectionately called “Pop Pop”. The love, welfare, and safety of his family was of utmost importance to him and he would stop at nothing to ensure it.
Devin is survived by his wife Marcia “Marci” D. Hunter; his biological father, Sgt. James W. Hunter Sr.; 5 sons and 3 daughters-in-love: Devin Jr. (Jessica), David Hunter, David Bennett (Kymberli), Marcus (Herocia), and Deon; 2+ grandchildren: Hakeem, Zori, and one on the way; brother: Shawn Hunter Sr. (Crystal); sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Lawrence (Rojulene) Nokes, Mary (Michael) Moore, and April (Ricardo Sr.) Weems; nieces: Brittney and Amani; nephew: Shawn Hunter Jr.; great niece: Ava and a host of other loving nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. He also leaves his favorite little girl, his dog Marley, that he affectionately called “Fat Momma”.
Devin had a huge heart. He never met a stranger. He loved his family and friends, and touched all of our lives in one way or another. Words cannot express how much he will be missed.
Thank you,
Marci Hunter
