Derrick R. Borden, 58, of North Providence, a beloved partner, son, brother, and friend passed away unexpectedly of a heart attack on Thursday, July 13. Born in Providence, the son of Kathleen (Murphy) Borden and the late Milton T. Borden. His larger-than-life personality, warm smile, and compassionate nature will be deeply missed but forever remembered.

Derrick grew up in the Valley View neighborhood of Providence. He attended St. Edwards Catholic School, and was an alter boy of the same church. He gained lifelong friendships and unforgettable memories, growing up there. A resident of North Providence for nearly 50 years, Derrick was an active member of the community. He was a participant in local politics, where he campaigned on behalf of candidates, and Derrick served the town for over a decade through his time at the Department of Public Works and the School Department. He was a graduate of North Providence High Class of 1984, and of the Community College of Rhode Island, where he obtained an Associate of Arts in Communications.

Derrick was passionate about enjoying his life with family and friends. Whether he was inviting them to share in walks around Lincoln Woods, to cast a line by the lake, or by joining him for an enthusiastic round of golf, he truly cherished creating memories and making bonds with his loved ones. Derrick’s passion for life extended to the realm of music as well, his depth of knowledge and appreciation reached across many genres, and he was often found finding new music to add to the soundtrack of his life. Derrick also found great joy in cheering for his Yankees, Bruins, and Raiders, where he brought together his loved ones to watch and share in his joy of sports.

Derrick’s memory will forever be treasured by his long-time partner of 15 years, Elizabeth Whalon, his mother Kathleen (Murphy) Borden, his sister Tammy (Borden) Medeiros, his brother-in-law Michael Medeiros, his brother Joshua Magnone and his fiancée Julissa Noriega, and his loyal canine companion, Shelby.
