On March 10, 2017, Dennis G. Bohlayer, 65, Captain, USCG (retired), of Ellicott City, MD, beloved husband of Linda G. Bohlayer; devoted father of Lisa Wissel (Alexander) and Brian Bohlayer (Sara); cherished son of Duane (Betty) and the late Eunice Bohlayer; dear brother of Larry Bohlayer (Sherrie) and Georgia Loder (Walt). He is also survived by three grandchildren, four step-sisters, and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

As a young man growing up in Honey Brook, PA, Dennis excelled academically as well as athletically, setting many records as a track and field athlete. His talents took him to the United States Coast Guard Academy, where he was named to the 1971 All-American College Track and Field Team, and later inducted into the USCG Academy Athletic Hall of Fame in 1997.

Graduating from the USCG Academy in 1973, Dennis later earned Master’s Degrees in both Civil Engineering and Business, becoming a licensed professional engineer. He served in the Coast Guard for 24 years, primarily in facilities management positions along the east coast. After retiring as a Captain in 1997, he worked for Towson University in the Facilities Management Department for 19 years. He was instrumental in leading many construction projects that resulted in new and modernized buildings, with an emphasis on energy efficiency.

In addition to all of his professional achievements, Dennis was a long-time member of Bethany United Methodist Church, where he served as a trustee and worked on numerous Habitat for Humanity projects in Baltimore. He was always willing to volunteer his time to benefit the church and members of the community.

Most of all, Dennis was a loving and devoted son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, and friend. Those who knew him are sure to remember his genuine smile, uplifting enthusiasm, and endearing stories of his many adventures. He lived his life with courage, humility, faith, kindness and an endless sense of humor that brightened the lives of all those around him.

Dennis was often found lending his “fix and repair” time and talent to many in his community and church. He was also keen on supporting the Mary-Claire King’s Division of Medical Genetics. It was her cancer research in BRCA and other genetic connections that were helpful in Dennis’s life.
