God called him home to be with His Lord and Savior on Monday, October 4, 2021, in Kalamazoo, MI.

He was born in Battle Creek, MI on August 3, 1939, to the late Leverich and Francis (Berry) Root; and lived there until 1957, when he graduated from Battle Creek Central High School and joined the U.S. Navy, serving as a Radioman. After being honorably discharged in 1960, he worked for North Central Airlines until becoming employed in Air Traffic Control with the Federal Aviation Administration at Detroit Metropolitan Airport.

He was married to Nancy A. (Bibbings) Root on August 25, 1961. God blessed their marriage with four children. Scott A. Root of Kalamazoo, Sheryl H. (Dennis) Henson of Scotts, MI, and Stephen R. (Jaclyn) Root of Paw Paw, MI and a child the Lord took home prior to being born. Seven grandchildren, Meghan (Jeremy) Glefke, Eric Root, Kyle Root, Tanner Root, Sawyer Root, Shiloh Root and Eden Root; one great-grandchild, Elijah Glefke; and two brothers, Stanley (Carolyn) Root, and Donald (Julie) Root. Dennis was preceded in death by his brother, Gary Root.

Dennis served God and Country for 38 years before retiring as Air Traffic Manager of the Kalamazoo/Battle Creek International Airport on January 2, 1998. He became employed part-time with Eastern Hills Golf Course and worked as a course ranger, starter, and in the pro shop for 22 years. He would tell you that he never began to mature as a Follower of Jesus Christ until he began to study God’s Word in Bible Study Fellowship. He was one of the founders of the Kalamazoo/Portage Men’s Community Bible Study class. He was active in his church, Calvary Bible Church, where he served as an Elder, taught in the children’s ministry, sang in the choir, and was involved in many other ministries. In addition to bible study and golf, his other hobbies included wood carving, landscaping, and spending time with his wife and their family.
