Denby A. Ranson Jr., 90, of Jacksonville, IL died Thursday, February 2, 2012 at Passavant Area Hospital in Jacksonville.
He was born December 2, 1921 in Lynnville; the son of Denby A. Sr. and Dorothy Cowgur Ranson. He married Mardelle Vieira on July 6, 1947 in Jacksonville and she survives.
He is survived by a son, Ron Ranson (wife, Cynthia) of Cecil, PA; three grandchildren, Phaedra Nunley (husband, Trent) of Dudley, NC, Corbin Ranson of Canonsburg, PA, and Casey Ranson stationed with the US Army at Ft. Lewis, WA; three great granddaughters, Hailey, Delaney and Ava Nunley; a brother, Rodger Ranson (wife, Joan) of Jacksonville; a sister-in-law, Velma Menghini (husband, Danny) of Springfield; a brother-in-law, Len Vieira Jr. of Bloomington, IN; and three nephews and two nieces.
A 1940 graduate of Jacksonville High School, Mr. Ranson served with the US Army during WW II including participation in the D-Day Invasion and the Battle of the Bulge. He was employed at the Woolworth’s store in Jacksonville, as a fireman at the Illinois State Fairgrounds, and later retired as a security officer at the Jacksonville Developmental Center.
A loving and wonderful husband, father and grandfather, Denby was a former youth baseball coach and avid reader. He enjoyed watching baseball and was a life-long Chicago Cubs fan. He was a member of the American Legion Post #279 in Jacksonville.
