Delpha Jo (Gray) Oliver, 90 of Nashville, died on Saturday at the Brown County Health and Living Center.
Delpha was born March 8, 1921 in Westfield, Indiana to the late Rev. Louis Garfield and Mable Maude (Hines) Gray. At a young age her family moved to Brown County. Brown County is where she grew up and graduated from Helmsburg High School in the class of 1939.
On May 23, 1942 she married Homer A. Oliver and Homer preceded her in death on November 1, 2002. She worked in the Brown County School Corporation as a school secretary at Sprunica and Helmsburg Elementary Schools. She ended her career as the Deputy Treasurer / Bookkeeper for the Brown County School Corporation in 2000 at the young age of 79. She was a great lady, “a working woman” who paved the way for all young women.
She loved bookkeeping, cooking, sewing, baking and reading. She was a member of the Unity Baptist Church for 50+ years. She was a founder of the women’s missionary and served as the church treasurer for 40+ years. She currently was a member of Sherwood Oaks Christian Church. Her main goal in life was to serve the Lord. She was a loving mother, wife, grandmother and great grandmother. She loved spending time with them as each one was special in her eyes.
She will be sadly missed and always remembered by her two daughters, Marcia K. Deckard (Boots) of Indianapolis and, Nancy Jo Bruce (Gary) of Bloomington, one son, Gary A. Oliver (Sheila Jane) of Nashville, one sister Nellie Fox of Reelsville, Indiana and two brothers Robert “Bob” Gray (Carol) of Cloverdale and Richard “Bud” Gray (Donna) of Greencastle, and sister-in-law Wanita Gray of Greencastle.
Also surviving are 6 grandchildren Rodney Deckard (Mary Ann), Andrea Cockerham (Chris), Ryan Andrew Oliver (Abbie), Heidi Jones (Levi), Michele Schultz (Abe), and Jannaka Jane Oliver, and 10 great grandchildren, Taylor Ann, Riley, Layton, Madeline, Andrew, Alex, Ava Jane, Ellie Jane, Walker and Cru Riley. Delpha was preceded in death by her husband Homer Amos Oliver, sister, Sylvia Edith Gray, and brothers, Samuel Gray, Carl Nathan Jack Gray, and Alfred Louis Gray.
