Delmar was born on October 10,1937 at the family farm near Manson, Iowa. He graduated in 1956 from Manson High School and attended Tobin Business College in Fort Dodge, Iowa. He was a baptized and confirmed member of St.
He was married to Julia De Penning in Washington, Iowa on July 30, 1976.
He worked for a local insurance business before leaving to farm. He founded his own welding company, and in 1960 he patented a latch system for vehicles to hold livestock and grain. His love of machines lasted his entire life. He would look at machinery and equipment and recall and build it. From a young age he built toy replicas based on farm machinery. He was an avid collector of toy tractors and other farm equipment.
Delmar is survived by his wife, Julia, his brother, Norman, and his brother-in-law, Arnold Smith as well as several nieces and nephews. Delmar was preceded in death by his parents, George and Grace Thoel and his sister, Geraldine Smith.
