DURHAM – Deborah Sue Hyde Gibbs, 69, passed away Thursday, September 30, 2021.

Mrs. Gibbs was born on July 30, 1952, to the late Lawrence and Lorena Thornton Hyde in Durham, NC.  She lived most of her life in Durham, but also lived in Scranton and Engelhard, NC.  Deborah attended school at Durham High School and Mattamusket High School.  She went on to get her Paralegal Degree at Durham Technical Institute.  She worked at Faison and Fletcher for a short while. Deborah spent most of her life being a homemaker taking care of her daughter, nieces, nephews, and her grandchildren.  She married her high school sweetheart, Curley B. Gibbs of 52 years.

At an early age, Deborah overcame many health-related obstacles (Polio, Throat Cancer, Post-Polio Syndrome, Breast Cancer, Open Heart Surgery, and her most recent battles). Deborah always pushed forward and persevered.  She loved camping, visiting Hyde County, and spending time with family. Her most prized position was her grandchildren and children.  She spent all of her life caring and doing for others.  Deborah loved her family.  She will be remembered as being a strong woman, determined, loving, and always giving.

In addition to her parents, she is predeceased by her son, Curley B. Gibbs, Jr., a brother, Lawrence A. Hyde and two sisters, Mary Elizabeth Minor and Gail Strombeck.

Deborah is survived by her husband of 52 years, Curley Gibbs; a son, Avery Minor Helmich-Gibbs and two daughters, Lena G. Lynn (Michael) and Ava Minor Gibbs: three grandchildren, Bryson Bradshaw Lynn, Gabriel Michael Lynn, Andrew Alton Lynn and a sister, Teresa Morris (Carl).
