Obituary of Dean L. Coleman

Dean Lewis Coleman, age 91, of Fridley, passed away peacefully on June 21, 2022, surrounded by his children. Preceded by his beloved wife of 66 years, Carmen, Dean leaves behind his family: 3 children, Patricia (DuWayne) Kilbo, Lynn (Michael) Larson, and Paul (Kim) Coleman; 8 grandchildren, Daniel (Anna), Erika (Sam), Alexander, Anthony, Adam, Madison, Allison, and Gabrielle; and 4 great grandchildren, Gavin, Isaac, Emma, and Louis. Dean was born in Dassel, Minnesota on July 6,1930, the son of Lewis and Edith Coleman. He had 6 siblings, Jackie, Bud, Darrel, Sharon, Mary Lou, and Jim. He enlisted in the army at age 18, soon after the Korean War broke out. He served with the 7th Infantry Division of the Army and was awarded the Bronze Medal for his service. Using the GI bill, he studied at St. Cloud State College and the University of Minnesota, earning bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Education. He worked in the Fridley school system as both a teacher and principal for 28 years, retiring in 1986. He was loved by both the teachers and students. Dean was a loving family man. He adored his wife and would tell anyone who would listen that he had the best kids in the world. He was a competitive duplicate bridge player and tennis player. He loved his Hosta garden and the world stopped when the Minnesota Vikings played. Dean and Carmen enjoyed traveling the world. They were fascinated by India, China, and Africa. They were also frequent visitors to Guatemala, where they explored the country and spent time with their beloved family.
