Leroy departed his earthly life and entered eternal rest on August 6, 2023, at 74, after a brief illness, comforted by his family. Leroy was born December 23, 1948, in Camden, South Carolina. He was the eldest of five children born to the late Bessie Ree Salmond Butler and Lenon “Pete” Butler Jr.
He attended the public schools of Kershaw County, graduating from Jackson High School Class of 1967. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from South Carolina State University in 1971. During his time at the University, he joined Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity and continued to be an active member. He was able to be commissioned into the United States Army by joining ROTC at South Carolina State University. After serving faithfully for six years on active duty, he transitioned to the Army Reserve. Leroy later completed his education by earning his Master of Business Administration at Webster University.
Starting in 1976, he embarked on his professional journey as a Manufacturing Supervisor at E.I. DuPont. He occupied numerous line management roles during his illustrious career, showcasing his exceptional leadership skills.
Leroy was a faithful member of the Mt. Moriah Baptist Church, in Camden, South Carolina, where he served on the Deacon’s ministry. Leroy was a very humble man who always wore a glowing smile on his face and gave back to the community by looking after the less fortunate He made time to assist those in need and had a great love for his family.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Deloris Butler Eichelberger, a brother, Nathaniel R. Butler; a niece, Vanetta S. Aaron and a nephew, Nathaniel R. Butler Jr.
Leroy leaves to cherish his fond memory, his faithful and loving wife of fifty-one years, Roberta Hunter Butler; three children, Col. Leroy Bryant (Jennifer) Butler USMC of Okinawa, Japan, Tracey (Randall) Soper of Columbia, SC and Kevin S. Butler of Columbia, SC; his sisters, Vivian D. McKinney of Freeland MI and Lottie M. Butler of Lugoff, SC; sister-in-love, Sherry J. Butler of Midlands, MI; brother-in-love Col. Claude J. Eichelberger, USAF (Ret) of Camden SC; three grandchildren Marcus Butler, Avery Soper and Addison Soper and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
