The life of Deacon Leonard Thomas Dixon, Jr. began when he blessed his parents, Leonard Thomas Dixon, Sr. and Jewel Smith Dixon with his birth on April 7, 1933, in Denver, Colorado. He was the second child born in the family. He was raised surrounded by his brothers, Vernon, Benjamin II, Michael, Tony, and his sisters, DeVonne, Ruth, Jewel, Cheryl, Patricia, and Sandraleen. He started working at ten years old, as an apprentice for Joe Vickers at Joe’s Shoe Repair. He was always athletic. He loved playing sports and was a member of the school football team and track team without his mother’s permission.
Leonard received his formal education in Denver, where he graduated from Manual High School. He furthered his education by attending Huston-Tillotson University in Austin, Texas. He was able to attend by obtaining a full scholarship for his skills in track and field.
On March 23, 1953, Leonard was drafted into the United States Army. While serving his country, he was stationed at Fort Lewis Washington.
